Yin Yoga

Thanks to my dear client, I have discovered yin yoga. A few weeks ago, she lent me her yin yoga DVD by Paul Grilley. Yin yoga is a slow kind of yoga, that focuses on stretching connective tissue. In many ways, it reminds me of Rolfing, but without the Rolfer! I have been playing with it for a couple of weeks and already see a difference in my posture, flexibility, and energy.

Yin yoga is meant to be done in the mornings when the body is still "cold." After a night's sleep, the muscles tend to be inflexible and throughout the day, they become more pliable. It is in this morning state that we have the opportunity to stretch the ligaments, tendons and fascia since they are challenged as well as the muscles. As the day goes by, the muscles become more pliable and the stretch becomes more about the muscles than the connective tissue.

I am very excited about starting a yoga practice. I have thought about doing that for a few years but didn’t find it enjoyable. With Paul Grilley, yoga is fun and it actually feels good in my body as I stretch new places. I am inspired by my clients who often talk about their practice and the benefits. I now know what they are talking about.
